What is Game of Thrones About?

For those of you who don’t watch it here’s a bit of background and why you should be hitting Netflix to catch up!

Now entering its 6th season, Game of Thrones is about the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos with a large ensemble cast. The same is true for the book series it is based on written by George R.R. Martin. The books and the TV series take readers and viewers on epic journeys into the wars and battles between noble families in a fight to reclaim their thrones. There is much fantasy and nail-biting adventure with gritty, interesting characters and a twisting plot.

What are the Highlights for Season 6?

It’s an exciting season for Game of Thrones and people are already talking about the controversial decision to depart from the plot in the original books. That’s because the original book series written by George R.R. Martin is running behind the screen-version. This doesn’t mean it has to be full of spoilers though and according to the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss they are purposefully giving a different version of event s to keep the books exciting when they do get published. They promise big surprises in the amazing world created by George R.R. Martin so that now fans can see different versions of events in this fantastical world. It sounds like good news for superfans of the books and the TV series. So fear not, it’s not set out to spoil the books but rather compliment them so that the marvelous adventures can continue.

Returning character, Sansa Stark is set to make a dramatic turnaround this season. It was revealed in Entertainment Weekly by Sophie Turner, the actress who plays Sansa in the series, that she will finally be standing up for herself. Season 6 will see Sansa become a leader and take on an empowered role since her escape from the evil clutches of the Bolton family last season. It’s hinted that she might even be getting some much deserved revenge on those who have wronged her in the past!

 

Who are the Stars?

As well as the return of many of the large ensemble cast you can expect to see new characters in Season Six. the fact that Thrones loves to expand and kill off its large ensemble cast, each new season promises a variety of additions into the wonderful world of  Westeros. Season 6 showcases some of the biggest and best casting to date.However, due Here’s our pick of who to look out for from big names to some cool newbies.

Freddie Storma I Dicken Tarley

Storma has starred in a variety of films and TV shows but it is his role as Cormac McLaggen, in the Harry Potter film series where he plays Hermione’s love interest and Gryffindor Quidditch keeper.  He plays the role of Dicken Tarley, younger brother to Samwell in Season 6 and described as the son that Randyll Tarly always wanted and that Samwell has not lived up to. He’s going to be doing a lot of action stuff as the hunter and swordsman of the family. We are set to meet more of Samwell’s family in Season 6 so watch out!

Richard E. Grant I Character yet to be named

Grant is one of the big guns of theater, film and tv and has been around since the 1980s. He is set to play an actor and manager of a theater troupe in Braavos, and is associated with Arya’s storyline, and isn’t particularly kind to his fellow actors off-stage. They’ll be putting on a show-within-the show, and it seems as though Grant could be a version of Izembaro, otherwise known as King of the Mummers. He is an associate of the Faceless Men, and plays King Robert Baratheon in the play. Reports suggest that he’ll be around for three episodes in season 6.

Essie Davis I Cersei Lannister

Davis is an Australian actress with her first major role in The Matrix Reloaded. However it is her character in The Babdook that many will know her from.

She was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Empire Awards, and Best Actress by the US Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. Davis will be starring alongside Richard E. Grant in the ‘play within the show.’ Her character apparently likes to drink rum and has been revealed to be fun and charismatic.

Rebecca Benson I Talla Tarly

She’s a relative newbie only graduating from Drama School in Scotland recently.Her role as Talla Tarly is the sister of Samwell Tarly. She’s described as very similar to her brother so viewers are sure to fall in love with her too.

Dean S. Jagger I Smalljon Umber

Jagger will be one of many new British acting talents to feature on Game of Thrones. The character of Northern Lord,  Smalljon Umber. Despite the name Smalljon, he’s a huge man with ‘a hatred that runs deep’. He is also the son of Greatjon Umber who was taken captive at the Red Wedding.

Joe Naufahu I Khal Jhaqo

Naufahu has previously appeared in historical drama with a role in Spartacus: War Of The Damned back in 2012. He will play Khal Jhaqo, a character that has featured in the books and is staying around for longer than one episode. Let’s hope he doesn’t get killed off although on this show, the odds are against you!
