The Top Albums of 2016 So Far

There’s been so many albums and so much music alongside a beginning of year that’s also been marred with the loss of some of the greatest music icons of our time. This inspired us at Fizzdot to round up our favorite albums of 2016 so far so that we can bring you something fresh.

We’re into all sorts so you’ll find that our top picks cross a whole bunch of genres which we think shows that there’s something for everyone but also that musical tastes can be challenged and changed. Of course there’s the top runners like Beyonce and Kayne West but we also take note of the less mainstream players like Lucinda Williams and Vanessa Amara.

Delve into our treasure trove of albums along with our top picks for tracks and why we love the albums. If that’s not enough, there’s even some sneaky suggestions for albums to look out for that haven’t even hit their release dates yet.

The Women

The artist: Beyonce,

The album: Lemonade

Why is it great?

According to AOTY Beyonce’s Lemonade is at the top of the list of top album releases in 2016. Out of 244 albums on the list, we think that’s pretty impressive. It’s even been described as “flawless” by some critics and hailed as “her boldest, most ambition, best album to date.”

But what do Beyonce’s fans say about it? Sucker  says the corresponding film made the album even more powerful and mitchypoo95 felt the album was catchy but not bubblegum.

Artist: Ariana Grande

Album: Dangerous Woman

Why is it great?

According to a recent article by CapitalFM Ariana’s fans known as the #Arianators are super psyched about what’s coming after the first single, Dangerous Woman was released from the album.

We don’t know for sure that’s it’s going to be great but with collaboration tracks with Lil Wayne, Macy Gray and Nicki Minaj, we think this album is going to be hot to trot and top music magazine, NME agree with us.

Artist: Lucinda Williams

Album: The Ghosts of Highway 20

Why is it great?

RollingStone says it’s not for everyone and that’s because if you live by pop and RnB you won’t get your kicks from this artist 12th album. Yes that’s right, 12 albums to her name so she’s doing something right. If you like alt-country and jazzy rawness illuminated by dazzling guitar arrangements, then check out this raw and grown-up album from Williams.

The Men

Artist: Kayne West

Album: The Life of Pablo

Why is it great?

The Life of Pablo is currently Pitchfork’s highest rated album and they describe it as possessing a “freewheeling energy” and debuted at Number 1 on Billboard.

It’s caused a stir among critics and The 405 has described the album as 18 heavenly hymns and Entertainment Weekly called it thrilling and explosive.  Whereas among fans it’s caused controversy and a lot of discussion. Some tracks flow as AOTY user, AlasEarwax identifies in Ultralight Beam and Feedback but some like Waves are a bit boring. However, it’s experimental and interesting which is why we think it deserves it’s place as one of the best albums of 2016.

Artist: Skepta

Album: Konnichiwa

Why is it great?

NME said that this is one key album to watch out for in 2016.  The track list is out and we are sitting poised to find out if we’re really gonna love this album but we do know that we love Shut Down and media across the world praised it as the song of 2015.

The Bands

Artist: Primal Scream

Album: Chaosmosis

Why is it Great?

NME and global media call the 11th album from Primal scream shiny, polished fun  and a very different beast from earlier work. there is a lot going on in the album from electrobeats to a ballad or two and some shiny pop. It’s interesting and even though it only just about hangs together in terms of coherency according to The Guardian, it’s pretty damn cool.

A headline show will accompany the album where the band will be playing in three locations across the United Kingdom.

Artist: Sunflower Bean

Album: Human Ceremony

Why is it great?

NME is excited about this Brooklyn trio for the “breathy vocals and ice-bright guitars”  and their album is an awesome angsty blend of teenage growing up and figuring out who you are. The bad does this through a quirky trying on process of different genres across 11 tracks where identities are tested and changed.

Artist: DIIV

Album: Is The Is Are

Why it is Great?

Another band born out of Brooklyn and praised by NME. Pitchfork describe the album as “a gorgeous yet unglamorous portrayal of drug addition” with bags of disillusioned style.

Artist: Vannessa Amara

Album: You’re Welcome Here

Why is it Great?

This gorgeous duo make their music in churches and this album oozes with emotion and atmosphere. It’s the album for heartbreak and we can’t get enough of it.
